On the order of 1% in the U.S. In some states, like California and Texas it is higher, but still less than 5%. I am not counting hydroelectric power in that because it is a traditional source, although totally renewable.

    Benefitting from its designation as a “green community,” Milton was awarded a $157,100 grant by the state that it plans to use for its wind turbine project as well as other energy-saving projects around town.

    Part of the benefit of being a green community is being eligible for awards to fund local renewable power and energy efficiency projects, according to a press release from the state Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

    Henry MacLean, chairman of the town’s Alternative Energy Committee, said that to determine which projects would get money from the grant, the committee looked at town facilities’ needs as well as which projects would have the greatest return of energy savings on the investment over five years.

Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive.

    The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track. The outlook for the U.S. and key emerging markets remains positive. In the first quarter of fiscal 2010, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 3.2%, while sale of electricity to the industrial sector, per the Energy Information Administration (EIA), increased by 2.7% year-over-year. In its latest release, the EIA predicted that total U.S. electricity consumption would increase by 2.7% in fiscal 2010 and 1.3% in fiscal 2011.
