Sunflowers Inspire Better Solar Power Tech

Mitsos and colleagues have come up with a new design for CSPs that reduces the required amount of land while boosting the amount of sunlight the heliostat mirrors collect. In perhaps the most beautiful example of biomimicry yet, it’s inspired by sunflowers.

The researchers at MIT, in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University in Germany, looked at the layout of current CSP plants. They put spaces between the mirrors and staggered them like seats in a movie theater. This pattern results in shadows being cast on some mirrors, reducing the reflection of light.

Aurora will focus its work on the agile flying-wing drone platform called the Skate, which can unfold from a backpack and launch like a boomerang to navigate streets and inside buildings.

Future variants of the Skate would have thin-film lithium batteries formed into a wing shape. The upper surface would have solar cells, and the lower surface would hold infrared photovoltaic cells for some night-time recharging.

What I think would be awesome is to have a whole fleet of drones like these but on a larger scale that can collect and store more power than they use to fly, and then automatically return to a base or mothership or something where it stores the extra energy in to a larger battery. Enough automated drones harvesting energy 24/7 could provide a lot of power.
