which is better for holding heat for solar power, water and granite, or just water?
Water Wall

Water has a higher specific heat than granite so it would make sense that water would hold more energy, but I'm wondering if the granite is better at storing the energy over time in a solar heater. I want to know why, because I'm confused.

water does have a higher SH, by a factor of 5. although since the density of granite is about 3, that means the volume SH is closer to water.

The only reason I can think of why you would use granite is that unless the water...

is solar water heating more cost effective use of solar power over powering your house or solar thermal plants?
nice barrel for water catchment

I was wondering is solar water heating a more cost efficient use of solar power over using large arrays to power your house or large solar thermal plants that are being contemplated all over the world.

It depends on how you do it. Passive solar is the most efficient and reliable. The more pumps, storage tanks and controllers you use the less efficient and reliable the system will be. The egyptians were successfully using passive solar 3,000...

  • Crystal Lagoons Applies Recreational Waters Technology to Power Station Cooling

Crystal Lagoons’ sustainable cooling technology , a water cooling system that can disconnect thermoelectric plants from natural water sources, is showing at Power-Gen International 2011 this week in Las Vegas.

The company aims to repurpose its patented artificial lagoon technology, originally developed for real estate projects and recreational purposes, as an eco-friendly substitute for traditional cooling towers at power stations.

The closed circuit cooling system has advantages to traditional cooling, the company said, in that it eliminates disruption to the marine ecosystem when water borrowed from the a natural resource is returned at much higher temperatures. This practice is banned in the U.S., and according to Crystal Lagoon, other countries are following suit.

Solar-Powered Movable Water System for Foreign and Domestic Use ...

Folk who travel to remote areas of the Earth often have an issue in that they are not able to find the clean, fresh drinking water their bodies need. You cannot tell what type of contaminants will be found in streams, streams, and lakes, and in areas where there is not any electricity, it’s tricky to boil water to disinfect it. These are situations in which a solar-powered cartable water system will prove invaluable. These miniature, self-contained units fit into a briefcase-sized bag so they can be taken anywhere. Smaller solar-powered units can produce as much as one gallon of cleand water per minute. Larger units can clean as many as 500 gallons per day. With one of these systems you are going to be able to have lots of clean water available wherever you go.
