I'm keen on building my own solar-powered alternative energy system in place this summer.
A single solar panel with 12V electric output costs between $100-250 to buy or build. Most of these are the portable variety (which cost less) and is a good way to reduce dependence on your utility company and generate your own electricity.

I know they have solar panels and they can be bought. LA-Area Solar Panel Company to Add Simi Valley Office
As part of a retail expansion, SolarMax Technology Inc. plans to open a Simi Valley store by late February, creating about 20 jobs.
The new Simi Valley office is part of a retail expansion for the solar panel company, geared at familiarizing customers with its products. Based in the City of Industry, SolarMax finances, sells and installs solar power systems for commercial and residential clients.
The company opened up retail locations in Orange County and Temecula earlier this year and opened its first retail store in Industry in 2008, said sales director Guillermo Santomauro. By the end of the year, SolarMax will have moved into retail shops in Simi Valley and Corona. The shops will open for business by late February and employ about 20 new workers per store, Santomauro said.
