Im working on making a solar iPod charger and need to know how many calculators to dismantle to make five volts for the USB charger.


my guess would be 2-3 volts. Use a voltmeter, measure it.

An iPod Touch needs 500 mA of charging current, even a 300 mA charger won't work (I tried it myself, it doesn't).

Assuming you could actually get 0.4 W out of that panel at 5 volts, that's only 80 mA of...

If a solar panel is rated for 5 volts, does that mean that it will never achieve higher?

I'm making a USB charger and since I want to also with my iPod I want to make sure that if I buy 5 volt solar panels and wire them in parallel that they won't achieve greater than 5 volts which would fry my iPod.


Have you considered using a small battery in between the solar panel and the IPOD? That would prevent the IPOD from having to absorb voltage spikes from direct power from the panel.

A solar panel's rating is at standard testing...
