They put out such a small charge I don't think it ever will charge a dead battery, solar chargers are more like battery maintainers. It will take some time to charge a low battery.

Impossible to answer without knowing the output of the charger, the typical amount of sunlight it would see, the capacity of the battery, and the wattage of the 12 volt bulbs.

It turned out to be unseasonably warm weather in my corner of Ontario, but it was still cold enough to notice a range that was significantly lower than that promised in the specifications.

    The Leaf runs solely on an 80-kW electric motor, fed by a 192-cell lithium-ion battery that is recharged by plugging into a wall socket. It also feeds a bit of power back into the battery while you’re driving through regenerative braking. On my top-line SL tester, a small solar panel on the rear roof provided a trickle charge to the 12-volt battery that runs the peripherals. It’s one of a small number of battery-only vehicles currently available or coming soon, such as the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Smart Fortwo Electric and Ford Focus EV. Other plug-in vehicles have other power sources, such as the Chevrolet Volt, which fires up a small gasoline engine to work as a generator to produce electricity when the battery is depleted, and the Toyota Prius Plug-In, which runs on its stored charge and then reverts to conventional hybrid operation.

    Many people know that solar chargers are a good alternative to non-renewable energy sources, but not everyone is familiar with how simple they are to build. Read on to learn more about different kinds of solar battery chargers, including how to build your own.

    In the most basic terms, a battery charger can simply be a power supply that sends electricity of the correct voltage to a battery. All you have to do is connect the battery to the charger, wait for it to charge all the way, and then take it out. A 12 volt battery may be charged in a 15-18 volt charger. However, this type of system poses the risk of overcharging.

    If you overcharge a battery, it’s probable that the battery’s life will be adversely affected, often significantly. Overcharging a 12 volt battery too often can damage it to the point that it will no longer hold a charge. The way to make sure that the needed voltage is used and that the battery is not overcharged is to use a charge controller. A charge controller will allow you to take advantage of the functions of a 12 volt solar charger without the danger of overcharging.
